DESCRIPTION:Blackletter and Uncial are historical styles of lettering traditionally done with a broad edge pen.\nBut what if we keep the characteristics of each style and reinterpret them with a pointed pen?\nThrough step-by-step instruction\, starting with basic strokes\, we will work to give each of these\nstyles its own distinctive look but also take advantage of the unique qualities of the pointed pen.\nWe will also learn ways to create some fun variations of each style. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Art of Etegami (which means “Picture Letters”). Etegami are cards (usually postcards) with simple painted images that are accompanied by heartfelt words or a haiku that echo the images that are accompanied by heartfelt words. These cards are mailed to a friend or loved one. \nMaterials: \n\nPaper: Standard postcards (Canson\, Strathmore\, Fabriano\, Kuretake) or cut your own\n4 x 6 cards with 140# watercolor paper\nInk: Sumi ink\, either liquid or ink stick ground on stone\nWatercolor: Traditional gansai (mineral-based watercolors from Japan) is best\, but any\nwatercolor is fine; can also apply color with shaved soft pastels or tissue paper collage\nBrushes: One sumi brush for the ink outline drawings\, and one other for the watercolors\nWriting tool: Make sure your writing tool has permanent\, waterproof ink. Water-based\nmarkers will run if they get wet. Remember—these are going through the mail.\nRecommended pens are Sharpie Fine Tip or Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen.\nPaint dishes or a small 6-well palette\nWater cups (best to have three—one for dirty\, one for medium-dirty and one clean)\nStamp or chop with Chinese red or vermillion ink\nRecommended book: “A Beginner’s Guide to Etegami” by Dosankodebbie\n\nPlease see emailed handouts for more info. \nThis is a free workshop for our members during our regular monthly meeting time. DESCRIPTION:In this weekend workshop\, we will be exploring the beloved pencil for fabulous marks\, images & letters led by internationally known calligrapher/artist\, Barbara Close. There won’t be any messy ink spills here! It will be a great experience seeing similar pointed pen or broad-edged looks come to the surface with our graphite. The textures are delicate and bold. It’s an exciting adventure. \nThis workshop will be on Zoom\, March 22 & 23\, 2025. 10 am – 5:00pm with a one hour break from 1:00 – 2:00pm EST.
