Penny Schwan – “ValenTangles” and Envelope Book

This class will be a brief introduction to Zentangle® and practice with some simple “tangles” that can be applied to a Valentine “string” or used to embellish your calligraphy. Time permitting, we will also look at tangled letters and embedded letter options.

In the second half of the class, we will make an envelope book by Meredith Jane Klein featured in “Bound & Lettered” Vol. 15, No. 3.  This can be made as a small book, a card or a gift card holder.  And don’t worry, if you are not “feeling the love” on Sunday, there will be non-Valentine options available!

Below are supplies needed for the class.  For the Optional items, DO NOT BUY if you don’t have them.  You might not need/want to use these items, or you can borrow from me or other members.

All the materials to make the Envelope Book (cover paper, filter paper, binding thread/ribbon, card stock) will be provided.

Basic Supplies:  Pencil, ruler, scissors, glue or glue stick, scrap paper for practice, your choice of calligraphy pens/inks

For Tangling:  Micron 01 pen or equivalent, soft (2B) pencil, tortillon or blending stump (I will have a few available)

Optional:  Colored Microns or equivalent or fine tip markers, gold and/or silver gel pens

For Envelope Book:  X-acto knife and cutting mat*

Optional:  Bookbinding needle (preferably one with a moderate size eye), awl, tweezers, double-sided tape

*Please Note:  If you have a copy of Bound & Lettered noted above, please bring it.  I will make a few copies of the article for those who don’t have copies and would like to follow along.

From Carrie: “DANCIN” PEN” IS MY FUNKY TWIST ON THE ITALIC ALPHABET. IT ALL STARTED WITH THE BONE ALPHABET AND PEN MANIPULATION AND THEN RAN AMOK INTO ALL MY OTHER ALPHABETS. IT’S A NEW EXPRESSIVE ALPHABET THAT CONVEYS EMOTION AND FEELING WHEN YOU READ A PIECE OF WORDS THAT MOVE YOU. YOU WILL WRITE LETTERS THAT SAY WHAT YOU FEEL. IT’S A REAL TRIP INTO FREEDOM AND RELAXATION. THERE WILL BE LOTS OF “AHA’S”.
